Introduction:

Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of Pakistan, Fort Munro stands as a testament to the country's rich cultural and historical heritage. Previously, it was known as Loilaresir. Located in the Dera Ghazi Khan district of Punjab, this hidden gem is gaining popularity for its scenic beauty, pleasant climate, and the perfect blend of tranquility and adventure it offers. Let's embark on a virtual journey to explore the wonders of Fort Munro. I have been lucky to see this beautiful landscape a few times.

A Brief History:

Fort Munro, also known as Tuman Leghari, has a historical significance that dates back to the British colonial era. Initially established as a military outpost, it has evolved into a pleasant hill station over the years. The fort served as a strategic location for the British army during their rule in the Indian subcontinent. The town was Named after Commissioner Multan division Colonel (later Major-General) Munro.

Scenic Beauty:

One of the most appealing aspects of Fort Munro is its enchanting natural beauty. Situated at an elevation of 6,470 feet above sea level, the fort provides panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The lush greenery, combined with the cool and refreshing climate, makes Fort Munro a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Steel Bridge:

Several steel bridges have been connected to make a more than 10 km long steel bridge facilitating traffic. The project was first announced by the National Highway Authority of Pakistan along with the Japan International Cooperation Agency in 2016. It was constructed to provide a safe and wide road for the cargo trucks and connect South Punjab to the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, inaugurated the steel bridge in April 2020.

Tourist Attractions:

1. Escape from Hot weather:

Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan areas are very hot during the summer season, and Fort Munro provides good picnic points and short trip in near vicinity, rather than going to Murree or Northern areas. I have seen many families enjoying themselves there during the summer season as well.

2. Prospect Point:

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, Prospect Point is the perfect spot. It offers breathtaking views of the Sulaiman Range and the valley below. Adventure enthusiasts can indulge in activities like paragliding and zip-lining to experience the thrill of soaring through the skies.

3. Suggested Trip Plan:

Fort Munro is approximately 200 km from Multan and 100 km from Dera Ghazi Khan. Depending upon your affordability and the type of conveyance you have, you can either stay a night at Multan or Dera Ghazi Khan. If you are staying at Dera Ghazi Khan leave early for Fort Munro, it takes around two and a half hours to reach. Hotel One at Dera Ghazi Khan has good accommodation. You can take along haversack or enjoy food at local restaurants. Spend 2 to 3 hours at the site and then move back. Tourists from Balochistan also come here.

4. Zaytoon Restaurant:

Zaytoon Restaurant near Ghazi Ghat toll Plaza on the Indus River ( Dera Ghazi Khan) is a good restaurant en route with great taste. Delicious dishes of fish and mutton are prepared here.

Still there are many instances where thousands of tourists and travellers get stuck in Fort Munro after a landslide blocking the inter-provincial highway connecting Punjab with Balochistan. The government should make better traffic on both ends.
